External Examination Results 2019-20


  • All Y11 students who were exclusively on BAPA roll or at our APs secured at least one qualification. This included two students who had never attended BAPA due to receiving home tuition and being permanently excluded immediately prior to lockdown. (One student who was on a RAP place at Grange did not achieve any qualifications due to her giving birth immediately prior to the exam period).
  • Twelve students accessed at least one GCSE these ranged from grade 6 to grade 1. It was pleasing to see grade 4s in English and / or Maths from the full range of providers.  
  • Nationally only 5% of permanently excluded children achieve a grade 4 in their core subjects. Of our cohort, 25% achieved a grade 4 in Maths and 19% in English.
  • Four students were working below this level (Inc. 2 who never attended BAPA).

(Of the current cohort at BAPA it is worth noting that over 70% have left primary school with grades that are below the secondary ready benchmark).


  • We now work with five AP providers at Key Stage 4 to allow student to access to relevant qualifications. Work should be done to ensure this is built on this year and the qualifications in Employability and the Vocational qualifications at Bradford College have the same success rate as the other alternatives.
  • There is one LAC child in the cohort and another child became LAC during lockdown. Both of these secured GCSEs in English and Maths alongside other qualifications.

Behaviour and Safeguarding in 2019-20


  • The attendance for 2019-20 was taken for the period until lockdown. From that point onwards, attendance was not recorded using attendance registers, but daily attendance information was forwarded to the DfE. Attendance for 2019-20 was 57% and this is lower than previous years. The reason for this is the change in cohort from short-term prevention places to fixed term exclusion places. These included a significant number of students who were disaffected and had not been engaging with education for sustained periods of time.
  • Pupil attendance was an average of 3% points better whilst at BAPA compared to their previous school attendance.
  • There is a very low level of pupil exclusion with only 6 days being lost to exclusion.
  • For an average seven-week period, pupil attitudes to their self and school (PASS) improve by an average of 24%. This is clear evidence on the positive impact on attitudes and behaviour.
